The Coordinating Council of the Green Path of Hope, representing the opposition leadership while Mir Hossein Mousavi, Zahra Rahnavard and Mehdi Karroubi have been under house arrest for more than 11 months, has called on people in Tehran and other major cities to protest silently on February 14 — 25 Bahman, the first anniversary of Green Movement demonstrations around Iran.

The Council states: “Despite the fact that Iran’s oil revenues in recent years have surpassed $600 billion (more than the revenues of all post-revolution governments put together), the conduct of those who rose to power with promises of justice and bringing oil income to the people’s tables, stamping out poverty, corruption and discrimination, has led to nothing but the decline of economic growth and investment to its lowest levels and the rise of inflation and unemployment to its highest in the past twenty years, while the scope of poverty, corruption and discrimination has widened at a disastrous rate.”

It follows the recent statement by 39 prominent political prisoners that called on the people to pursue their rights and for the release of Mousavi, his wife, Dr. Zahra Rahnavard, and Karroubi. The statement emphasized that the regime, instead of „making up for its errors, is still insistent on pursuing a policy of suppression, as hundreds of activists remain illegally behind bars, more than two and a half years after the 2009 [presidential] election. It is the human, legal and legitimate right of Iranians to protest against the state of their lives and their country. Protesting is the right of all Iranians.“

Green activists from 48 major and smaller cities in Iran have announced the protest routes via Facebook. The rallies are scheduled for 25th Bahman (February 14, 2012) at 4 pm (local time).
